The Muhlenberg women's basketball team overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, its second in the past three days, ultimately losing in a tightly contested matchup with Ursinus, 71-63.
Freshman
Rachel Saxton banked in a game-tying three-pointer with 7.4 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 57 apiece and force the extra five-minute period.
Despite the disappointing defeat, senior
Margaux Eripret put on a clinic with her stellar performance, finishing the game with a career-high 28 points to go along with 10 rebounds and two blocks. Senior
Tara Szawaluk also had a nice evening, posting a near double-double of 13 points and 7 rebounds.
Throughout the fourth quarter the Mules (10-14, 6-13) were forced to play catch-up, but they never stopped fighting back. Off a key offensive rebound and putback jumper by junior
Sara Peretti with 11.5 seconds to go, the Bears lead was cut to three, 57-54.
After a pair of missed free throws, the Muhlenberg inbounded from in front of its bench following a timeout. Saxton took the inbounds pass from freshman
Ava Connolly and hit her clutch shot from the top of the arc to send the game to overtime.
The Mules, who led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, took a 61-57 lead by scoring the first four points of overtime on a jumper from Peretti and a layup by Eripret. However, after another layup by Eripret made it 63-60, the Muhlenberg offense stagnated. Ursinus wrapped up the game on a 11-0 run.
Inserted into the starting lineup for the first time in her career, Connolly
(pictured above) contributed with a solid all-around performance, ending with 4 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds.
The Mules played back-to-back overtime games for the first time since 2013-14, and for the first time at home since 2003-04.
