Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Trades Sweeps

The Muhlenberg volleyball team split a pair of matches in a home tri-match.

The Mules (10-8, 2-3) dropped their Centennial Conference match with Gettysburg in three sets but rebounded to sweep DeSales, reaching double digits in wins for the 30th time in the last 31 seasons. The second result gave Muhlenberg sweeps of local rivals Moravian and DeSales in the same season for the first time since 2008.

Muhlenberg led 16-15 in the first set of the first match before Gettysburg scored seven of the next eight points. The Bullets (15-4, 2-3) never trailed again in a 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 win.

Junior Christina Dalton put down a season-high 10 kills to lead the Mule attack.

The DeSales match was a rare three-setter between two teams that had gone to five sets in five of their previous six meetings. Sophomore Esmae Oehler had a phenomenal match, recording 18 kills (one off her career high set earlier this season in a five-set match), a season-high 17 digs and a carer-high 4 blocks.

The first set was close in the early going, with the Bulldogs (12-9) holding a 14-13 lead before the Mules went on a 7-0 run with Dalton (pictured above) serving to take command. Sophomore Rachel Jacobs had a pair of kills in the run, and Muhlenberg eased to a 25-19 win.

Muhlenberg came from four points down (14-10) to capture the second set, netting four straight points with senior Caleya Tereska serving late in the set to turn a 19-18 deficit into a 22-19 lead. Oehler finished off the 25-22 win with a kill and then went on to record 8 kills in the third set, another 25-22 win to close out the match. Again the Mules rallied late, breaking an 18-all tie with a 5-1 run. The Bulldogs came back with three straight points to make it 23-22 before a kill by Jacobs and a service ace by junior Alyssa Faville clinched the win.

Faville totaled 41 digs in the two matches, improving her CC-leading average to 5.33 digs per set. Senior Emma Eglinton posted double-doubles in both matches (31 assists, 12 digs vs. Gettysburg and 34/10 vs. DeSales). Sophomore Catherine Maguire recorded 9 blocks, including 6 in the DeSales match.
