Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Clinches Playoff Berth

The Muhlenberg men's soccer team played fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 2-2 tie in its final home game of the season.

Before the game started, the Mules (6-5-5, 3-1-4) clinched a Centennial Conference playoff berth when Washington defeated McDaniel. With one game to play in the regular season, Muhlenberg is in fifth place, one point behind Gettysburg. The Mules travel to regionally ranked Gettysburg for their regular-season finale next Saturday and can secure a first-round home game with a win.

Muhlenberg accomplished something no other team has done this year against the undefeated Blue Jays (11-0-5, 5-0-3) – score more than one goal. Hopkins came into the game having allowed only four goals all season, tied for the fewest in Division III.

The Mules, who entered the game having scored at least three goals in three straight CC games for the first time since 2004, fell into an early 1-0 hole. But just five minutes after the Blue Jay goal, Muhlenberg found the equalizer. After sophomore Noah Pietila drew a foul, senior Greyson King headed in classmate Taylan Akdag's free kick for his first goal of the season.

The score remained 1-1 until late in the first half, when freshman Elie Khalil intercepted a pass by the Hopkins goalie and fed junior Luke Feeney for the go-ahead goal – Feeney's third of the season.

Johns Hopkins headed in a free kick in the second half to tie the score. It remained level for the final 20 minutes, leaving Muhlenberg undefeated (4-0-3) at home for the season.

The Mules' five ties this season are tied for the second-most in program history. Only the 2010 team (13-3-6) that advanced to the NCAA "Sweet 16" played more.

Prior to the game, Muhlenberg honored seniors Giovanni Tafuri, Chris Richards, Tarin Morris, Sebastian Leyes, King, David Goldstein, Francois D'Elia, Akdag and Brandin Osborne.
