The Muhlenberg field hockey team put up a strong fight against sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins in a 1-0 loss.
The Blue Jays (11-3, 7-0) scored the lone goal of the game just 98 seconds after the opening whistle, but the Mule defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way. Hopkins came in averaging 4.0 goals in its first six Centennial Conference games of the season.
Sophomore
Grace Leard (pictured above)Â kept it close by making a career-high 11 saves. She got help from junior
Taylor Canfield, who made a defensive save on a blast off a penalty corner late in the first quarter. The Blue Jays were awarded a penalty stroke after Canfield's save, but the attempt went wide left.
After facing a 16-2 deficit in shots in the first half, Muhlenberg (5-8, 3-4) evened the play in the third quarter and had a legitimate chance to tie midway through the period. A shot by junior
Nicole Randazza off a penalty corner hit the post, and a follow-up shot by sophomore
Devon Eastlack was swept off the line off the reigning Division III defensive player of the week.
