Football Leaps Past Gettysburg

The Muhlenberg football team threw a long touchdown pass on its third play for the second week in a row and went on to a 56-17 win against Gettysburg.

A week after throwing five touchdown passes in a 41-7 against McDaniel, sophomore Joe Repetti threw five more. It was only the second time in program history that a quarterback threw five TDs in back-to-back games. Repetti also tied a school record with six total offense touchdowns, notched his first career 300-yard game, completing 22 of 33 passes for 338 yards, and became the first Mule QB ever to throw touchdown passes to five different receivers in a game.

The Mules (3-2, 3-1) rolled up 585 yards of total offense, rushing for 247 and passing for 338, and forced four turnovers on defense in toppling the Bullets (1-4, 1-3) for the 10th straight time and retaining possession of the Old Tin Cup.

The defense forced a three-and-out on the game's first possession, and Muhlenberg took possession at its own 25 following the punt. On the third play, Repetti threw a deep ball to junior Pelton Esannason Jr., who caught the ball near the 30-yard line, slipped a tackle and raced into the end zone for a 65-yard touchdown, the first of his career.

Esannason finished as the Mules' leading receiver with five catches for 93 yards.

On the next play from scrimmage, senior John Lohrer recorded the first of his two interceptions along the sideline near midfield. Six plays later, after running 24 yards on third-and-7 to pick up a first down, Repetti hit junior Christopher Ardito in the end zone from 10 yards out to make it 14-0 just 5:01 into the game.

Muhlenberg doubled its lead in the second quarter on short TD passes from Repetti to seniors James Nye (6 yards) and Ethan Brader (5 yards).

Gettysburg scored on a Hail Mary on the last play of the first half and on its first possession of the second half to draw to within two touchdowns at 28-14.

The Mules needed only seven plays to reach the end zone after Gettysburg's second touchdown, with Repetti carrying in from 14 yards out on fourth-and-2.

Muhlenberg put the game out of reach by scoring touchdowns on three straight possessions in the fourth quarter, starting with a 1-yard run by Brader and followed by two players scoring their first career touchdowns - junior Timothy Buda on a 17-yard reception and freshman Amari Dunn on a 44-yard run.

Dunn was one of four Mules to break off a run of at least 20 yards, joining Repetti, Brader and senior Seth Paluck (pictured above). Repetti led the Mules on the ground with 77 yards on only eight carries.

Senior Owen Daddona paced the defense with 8 tackles, including a sack, and his second career interception. Lohrer made 6 tackles to go along with his two picks, and junior Matt Papa also recorded 6 tackles, one forcing a fumble that was recovered by senior Nicholas DeSenzo to set up a touchdown drive.
