Football Falls in Slugfest

The Muhlenberg football team rallied from 14 points down in the second half to take a fourth-quarter lead, but Ursinus scored the final two touchdowns of the game to pull out a 42-35 win.

The loss snapped the eighth-ranked Mules' 12-game Centennial Conference winning streak, and it was the first time they scored more than 30 points in a regular-season loss since 1998.

Senior Michael Hnatkowsky passed for 395 yards, two short of his career high, and was responsible for all five of Muhlenberg's touchdowns, passing for four and running for one to break the previous school record of 113 career touchdowns. He now has 115 (106 passing and nine rushing). Hnatkowsky completed 32 passes, topping the career high of 29 he set last week at Dickinson, in his seventh career 300-yard game.

The Mules (2-1, 1-1) trailed 28-14 following a pick-six early in the second half before beginning their comeback. Hnatkowsky hit junior Thomas Jenkins for a 19-yard touchdown pass to cap a seven-play, 82-yard drive, and three plays later senior linebacker Spencer Kirin intercepted a pass near midfield.

Muhlenberg need only six plays to reach the end zone again, with senior tight end Zach Deldin hauling in his first career TD pass from 4 yards out to tie the score at 28-28 with 4:41 left in the third.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, the Mules moved quickly down the field again, taking a 35-28 lead on Hnatkowsky's 12-yard toss to senior Michael Feaster on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The defense again stopped the Bears (2-1, 1-1) on three plays, and Muhlenberg appeared to have all the momentum when senior Thomas Murphy caught a pass for a 57-yard gain to the Ursinus 1-yard line. But the turning point of the game came two plays later, when the Bears picked off a pass in the end zone and returned it 87 yards to the other end of the field. Five plays later, the game was tied at 35-35.

Ursinus scored again on its next drive to open up a 42-35 advantage with 6:03 remaining. The Mules were forced to punt on their ensuing possession, but the defense held, and with 3:38 left Kirin blocked an Ursinus punt (pictured above) to give Muhlenberg the ball 28 yards from a tying touchdown.

A holding penalty pushed the Mules back, however, and on fourth down Hnatkowsky was intercepted near the goal line.

Muhlenberg had one last play with 5.9 seconds left and tried a lateral that was broken up by Ursinus near midfield.

Feaster topped the 100-yard mark receiving for the second straight week, catching nine passes for 107 yards. Junior Ethan Brader caught a touchdown pass, the first of his career, to open the scoring in the first quarter.

In addition to his interception and blocked kick, Kirin recorded eight tackles, as did senior Joshua Barnett. Senior Pat Palmer had two sacks among his three tackles for loss, and senior Quentin Ogren notched his first career interception, returning it 36 yards to set up the Mules' first touchdown.
