The Muhlenberg men's soccer team tied perennial Division III powerhouse Messiah 1-1 in its home opener.
It was the second straight tie for the Mules against the Falcons, who have won 11 Division III national championships and were ranked ninth in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll.
Both teams entered the game undefeated, untied and unscored-upon through two games. Messiah (2-0-1) ended the Mules' shutout streak less than five minutes into the contest, but Muhlenberg netted the equalizer at the 20:28 mark when junior
Brandin Osborne converted a pass from sophomore
Zack Mikuta for his second career goal.
The teams played almost 90 more minutes without finding the back of the net again. Messiah had a slight 14-11 advantage in shots, and junior
Brendan Duffy came up big with 5 saves.
The Mules (2-0-1) won three corner kicks in the two overtime periods, but it was the Falcons who had the best chance to come away with a win in the waning seconds when a shot from close range was blocked.
