Two home runs and two walks were the story of the day for the Muhlenberg baseball team.
The Mules (5-4, 4-4) split a pair of one-run games at home with McDaniel, nearly coming all the way back from a 6-0 deficit before dropping the first game, 8-7, and scoring twice in their last at-bat to take the nightcap, 6-5.
Senior
Justin Kimmel homered in consecutive at-bats for Muhlenberg, hitting a two-run blast in the ninth inning of Game 1 and a solo shot in the first inning of Game 2. It's the 13th time in program history that a Mule has gone yard in both ends of a doubleheader. Kimmel
(pictured above) is the first to do it since 2014.
Behind Kimmel's second home run and a strong outing from senior
Paul Poppert, who fanned a career-high 11, the Mules led 4-2 going into the eighth inning. But the Green Terror (2-8, 2-8) scored three times in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer and a double steal to take a 5-4 lead.
Muhlenberg loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth on a single by senior
Skyler Petrie, a passed ball on a strikeout and a hit batter. With two outs, junior
Ryan Hebert walked on four pitches to bring home the tying run, and freshman
Jonathan Toth took a close 3-1 pitch to force home the go-ahead run.
Sophomore
Quinn Rovner worked a 1-2-3 ninth to wrap up his first career win.
In the opener, McDaniel scored six in the first, capped by a grand slam. The Mules scored three in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of senior Rob Cappadona, to close to within 6-4.
It was 8-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth before Kimmel hit his first round-tripper to make it a one-run game, but the final two batters were retired.
Muhlenberg pitchers struck out 17 batters in the first game, with senior
Truman Devitt whiffing 10 to match a career high. It's the first time Mule starting pitchers have reached double digits in strikeouts in both games of a doubleheader.
