Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Wins Thriller in Home Finale

The Muhlenberg field hockey team closed its home season with a bang, tying in the last minute of regulation and winning in the last minute of overtime to defeat Bryn Mawr, 2-1.

Sophomore Katie Raab netted the winner with 35.8 seconds left in overtime to lift the Mules to a victory in a game in which they trailed for 57 minutes.

The Owls (8-5, 3-4) scored just 2:15 into the game off what would be their only penalty corner until the fourth quarter. Neither team did much in the circle for the first three quarters, combining for only four shots and two corners.

Bryn Mawr, which came in tied with Johns Hopkins for the fewest goals allowed by a Centennial Conference team this season, maintained its one-goal margin well into the fourth quarter until the Mules (5-8, 3-5) turned up the pressure in the final two minutes. Muhlenberg won four penalty corners in the late going, finally cashing in when senior Maleah Hess blasted in a shot with just 32.8 seconds remaining.

The Owls were the dominant team at the start of the overtime period, taking six corners in the first six minutes. Senior Mel Cartagena made three saves in rapid succession to keep the game tied.

Senior Megan Webber (pictured above), who scored the winning goal in the Mules' overtime win at Gettysburg earlier in the season, set this one up by winning a ball on the right sideline and sending a long pass into the middle of the field to Raab, who had slipped behind the Bryn Mawr defense. Raab took one dribble past the Owl goalie and shot the ball into the open cage for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

It was the first recorded time in program history that the Mules tied in the last minute of regulation and went on to win in overtime. In 2015, they tied a game against Scranton with 55 seconds left in regulation but lost 2-1 in overtime.
