Although the Muhlenberg volleyball team dropped two matches, it did something many others have failed to: win a set from Johns Hopkins.
The Mules (9-11, 2-5) took the second set against the Blue Jays, 25-19. It was only the seventh set lost this season by Hopkins, the top-ranked team in Division III and defending national champion. Only one other Centennial Conference team has won a set against the Blue Jays (22-0, 7-0).
Muhlenberg wound up losing in four and fell to Clarkson in three sets in its second match of the day.
The Mules trailed in the second set, 7-5, before going on a 7-0 run behind the serving of sophomore
Julia Ficon. Sophomore
Jenna Stockfeder recorded blocks on back-to-back points during the run, teaming up with freshman
Rachel Jacobs (pictured above) on one.
Hopkins cut the gap from 12-7 to 13-11 before consecutive kills by Jacobs
(pictured above) and sophomore
Christina Dalton gave Muhlenberg some breathing room. The Blue Jays called a timeout at 21-17, but sophomore
Alyssa Faville served an ace coming out of the break, and freshman
Esmae Oehler ended the set with a kill.
Johns Hopkins rebounded to win the third set decisively and closed out its 56th straight win with a close fourth set (25-19).
Faville pulled up 17 digs, while freshman
Kelsey Miller narrowly missed a double-double with 9 assists and 10 digs.
In the Clarkson match, Faville added 16 digs, and junior
Emma Eglinton finished with 16 assists and 12 digs.
