Trevor Virno, a neuroscience major and rising junior on the Muhlenberg baseball team, hit a home run with a recent community service project.
 
"Due to the coronavirus pandemic, food pantries on Long Island have been struggling to keep up with the need for food from families," he said.
 
Earlier this summer, Virno helped organize a food drive through COMPASS Unity, a drug and alcohol coalition funded through a Drug Free Communities (DFC) Grant in his home school district of Bellport.
 
"[We] collected more than two truckloads of food that was given to two local food pantries - Lighthouse Mission and Angels of Long Island. I am thankful for my community for stepping up and helping others in need," he said.
 
The response was so incredible that Virno helped organize a second food drive a month later. The result was another truckload of donations for Lighthouse Mission.
 
According to Virno, the primary goal of COMPASS Unity is to eliminate underage drinking and illicit drug use by providing information and organizing events that promote healthy lifestyles and positive choices for youth.
 
"As an athlete and someone who aspires to work in medicine, this is very important to me," he said. "I think it's important to help others in my community so they don't have to struggle during difficult times. That makes our community a better place for everyone."
