A trip that started with dominant hitting ended with dominant pitching for the Muhlenberg softball team.
Junior
Sophie Chong and sophomores
Cora Bridgers and
Sarah Raab combined to allow only seven hits while striking out 19 as the Mules (5-2) wrapped up their week in Myrtle Beach with shutout wins against Rivier (3-0) and Hilbert (7-0).
Chong tossed a four-hitter in the opening game for her third career shutout and fanned a career-high seven. The Raiders had a runner at third with one out in the fourth before Chong struck out the next two hitters. She allowed only one baserunner in the final three innings, appropriately finishing her gem with a strikeout.
Muhlenberg didn't hit much against Rivier, scoring all three of its runs directly off errors, but came out swinging in the Hilbert game, pounding out 13 hits.
The offense was more than enough for Bridgers, who struck out 10 of the 16 batters she faced in her five-inning stint while allowing only one Hawk to reach base. The double-digit strikeout game was the fourth of her career - her first when pitching fewer than seven innings.
Raab worked a scoreless sixth and seventh to complete the shutout.
Sophomore
Kristin Oberg sparked the offense by going 3-for-4 from the leadoff position. She scored the first run of the game
(pictured above) in the first inning on a single by junior
Elise Enslin.
Freshman
Sara Fallon also singled in a run in the first, and sophomore
Sarah Karmazyn hit a two-run double in the second. Senior
Sarah Schubert drove in runs in consecutive at-bats in the third and fifth, narrowly missing an opposite-field home run in the latter at-bat. She settled for her third triple of the season.
Senior
Nicole Bergamo went 2-for-2 and scored a run.
