The Muhlenberg softball team scored three runs in three straight innings and defeated Cedar Crest, 9-4, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.
The second game was called due to darkness in the middle of the fourth inning with the Mules ahead, 6-3.
Sarah Schubert,
Sydney Carey and
Nicole Bergamo - the three Muhlenberg seniors - all contributed to the win.
Schubert broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fourth with an opposite-field home run, her fifth career round-tripper. Schubert also was hit by a pitch and scored a run in the fifth and recorded two assists from right field by throwing out the batter at first base on a would-be single.
(Schubert also threw out a runner at home plate in the second game, although that assist won't count.)
Carey went 2-for-3 and started the Mules' three-run fifth with a two-out single. Bergamo pitched a scoreless seventh to wrap up the win, retiring the final batter on a comebacker.
Muhlenberg (6-2) trailed 1-0 before getting three consecutive two-out RBI hits in the third: a single by sophomore
Genna Cicchetti, a double by freshman
Sara Fallon and a triple by sophomore
Cora Bridgers.
When Schubert hit her home run
(pictured above), it gave the Mules a single, double, triple and homer in order in a span of six batters.
Cicchetti added another big two-out hit, a two-run single, later in the fourth, and sophomores
Kristin Oberg (single) and
Sarah Karmazyn (two-run double) delivered two-out run-scoring hits in the fifth.
Karmazyn was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice to go along with two runs scored and a stolen base. Oberg swiped two bags.
Bridgers struck out five in 2 1/3 relief innings to earn her fourth win of the season.
