An extra-inning walkoff single by sophomore
Genna Cicchetti lifted the Muhlenberg softball team to a 3-2 win against William Peace in the first of two scheduled games in North Myrtle Beach. The second game was rained out.
With the score tied 2-2, sophomore
Kristin Oberg drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the eighth. (International tiebreaker rules would have taken effect in the ninth.) After falling behind 0-2 while attempting to bunt, freshman
Sara Fallon worked the count full and then grounded out to second, which had the same effect as a bunt: moving the winning run into scoring position.
Oberg went to third on a single up the middle by sophomore
Sarah Karmazyn, who then stole second. The Mules (3-2) wound up with the bases loaded when the Pacer shortstop faked a throw to third on a ground ball by junior
Elise Enslin.
Cicchetti came up next and ripped a 2-0 pitch between the pitcher and shortstop, bringing home Oberg with the winning run. It was the second career walkoff hit for Cicchetti, who had one against Scranton last year.
The hit made a winner of sophomore
Cora Bridgers, who went the distance, allowing only four hits and striking out five. Bridgers
(pictured above) also started Muhlenberg's two-run third inning with a single to center. She came around on a triple by senior
Sarah Schubert, who scored when Oberg doubled.
Junior
Sophie Chong tied a dubious school record on her 21st birthday by getting hit by pitch twice in the same game.
