Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Steals Win at Gettysburg

Sophomore Dan Gaines made two free throws with two-tenths of a second remaining to give the Muhlenberg men's basketball team a wild 74-72 win at Gettysburg in the final game of the regular season.

Picked sixth in the Centennial Conference preseason poll, the Mules (18-7, 11-7) finished in a tie for third place with Haverford. Muhlenberg, ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic Region, is the fourth seed for the CC playoffs and will host fifth-place Washington in a first-round game on Tuesday.

Gaines finished with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Senior Matt Gnias scored 14 points, pushing his career total to 994, and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds for his first career points-rebounds double-double; he had a points-assists double-double two years ago.

Sophomore Nate Henty Brown also scored in double figures with 10 points.

A three-pointer by junior Michael Morreale with 6:18 left gave Muhlenberg its biggest lead, at 67-59. The Bullets (12-13, 6-12), who never led by more than four points, crept back and eventually tied the score on a putback jumper with 35.1 ticks on the clock.

The Mules held the ball until Gaines drove in for a layup with under 10 seconds remaining. He missed the layup, and Gettysburg grabbed the rebound, but as Gaines was running back down the court, he tipped the ball out of the hand of a Bullet. The ball rolled out to midcourt, and Morreale (pictured above) was there to grab the loose ball and pass it back to Gaines, who was fouled as he attempted a layup just before the final buzzer.

The 83-percent shooter calmly sank both free throws.

The Mules' final regular-season record of 18-7 is their best since the 2001-02 season, and their eight road wins are the most since 1956-57.
