The Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team scored three goals in a span of 45 seconds late in the fourth quarter to defeat Scranton, 16-13, in a thrilling home opener.
Junior
Ethan Grossman and
James Dalimonte each scored five goals for the Mules (2-0). Grossman added two assists to go over the 150-point mark for his career.
Muhlenberg scored three goals in the first 3:50 of the game, but the Royals (1-2) came back and took a two-goal lead for the first time (12-10) with 2:24 left in the third quarter.
Junior longstickman
Michael Fodi brought the Mules back within one when he scored his first career goal with 4.4 seconds left in the third on a rebound of Grossman's saved shot.
Goals by Dalimonte and freshman
Jack Kraemer early in the fourth put Muhlenberg back on top, at 13-12. The score remained that way until Scranton netted the tying goal with 3:52 left.
Less than a minute later, at the 2:58 mark, Dalimonte drove in from the right wing to score the go-ahead goal.
Scranton won the ensuing faceoff but immediately turned the ball over. Dalimonte took a clearing pass from junior
Matt Hager just past midfield and drove down the center of the field, beating the Royal goalie for his second goal in 28 seconds.Â
Junior
Matt Burke won the next faceoff and flipped the ball to freshman
Andrew Sokolowski, who fed Grossman for the final goal of the game.
Kraemer recorded a hat trick in the second game of his career, while freshman
Alan Stoloff (pictured above) recorded a goal and three assists. Another freshman,
Jason Metz, also netted his first career goal.
Despite the close score, Muhlenberg enjoyed huge advantages in shots (64-36) and ground balls (41-29). Burke won 15 faceoffs and scooped up 10 ground balls. Junior
Alexander Giaquinto picked up 6 ground balls and sophomore
Maxwell Seeber caused a pair of turnovers to go with his 5 ground balls.
Coming on the heels of the Mules' opening 15-4 win at FDU-Florham, it's the first time in program history they've scored at least 15 goals in their first two games of a season.
