The Muhlenberg volleyball team enjoyed its trip to Minnesota so much, it decided to spend some extra time on the court.
The Mules went to five sets in two of their three matches, tying a school record with eight five-set matches this season already. Muhlenberg acquitted itself well against three strong Minnesota teams, falling in four sets to 12-5 St. Thomas and defeating St. Olaf (13-4) in five before losing to Bethel (17-3) in five.
Playing in her home state, senior
Maggie Enestvedt (pictured above) recorded double-doubles against both St. Thomas (14 kills, 18 digs) and St. Olaf (16 kills, 10 digs). Her 38 total kills were second only to the 41 put down by senior
Kelly Tornetta in the three matches.
Muhlenberg (12-5) came from behind vs. St. Olaf to notch its lone win of the trip. The Mules dropped the first and third sets but came back both times to tie up the match.
They never trailed in the decisive fifth set and went ahead to stay, 3-2, on a kill by Enestvedt. St. Olaf scored three straight points to close to within 11-10 before a kill by junior
Tara Register put Muhlenberg ahead by two again. A kill by junior
Laura Boll gave the Mules match point at 14-11, and Boll combined with senior
Erica Schultz to end the match with a block.
Senior
Shannon Hubert topped the 40-assist mark in all three matches, running her school-record career total to 3,324 to move into 16th place on the Centennial Conference all-time list.
Sophomore
Rebecca Shear set a career high with 32 digs vs. Bethel.
The Mules previously played eight five-set matches in both 1999 (6-2) and 2003 (1-7). They are 5-3 in the marathons this year.
