The Muhlenberg volleyball team continued to be successful, and dramatic, outlasting Dickinson in five sets for its third straight win.
In their first 14 matches, the Mules (11-3, 2-1) have already played six that went the distance - as many as they did in 30 matches all of last year. The school record for five-setters in a season is eight.
And just three days after battling Haverford to their longest set (35-33) since the advent of 25-point scoring, the Mules played
another one in the opening set against Dickinson.
Senior
Kelly Tornetta, who reached the 1,000-kill milestone in that epic second set against Haverford, led the Muhlenberg attack in the Dickinson match with 19 kills. Junior
Maggie Enestvedt added 13 and senior
Erica Schultz tied a season best with 10.
The Mules scored the first point of the decisive fifth set on a block by juniors
Tara Register and
Madison Forrest and never gave up the lead. The Red Devils (4-9, 0-3) cut an 11-7 Muhlenberg lead to 12-11 before committing a ball handling error. A kill by Enestvedt and a Dickinson attack error ended the set at 15-11 and the match at 3-2.
Muhlenberg served for the first set seven times before finally ending the marathon on the eighth try on another combined block by Register and Forrest. The Mules trailed 11-5 at one point in the set but rallied behind the strong play of Tornetta, who recorded seven kills and a block in the set.
Dickinson took the even-numbered sets, 25-21, with Muhlenberg winning the middle set, 25-17.
Senior
Shannon Hubert notched her second 50-assist match of the season, finishing with 51 to go along with 19 digs. Register
(pictured above) and Enestvedt both pulled up a season-high 18 digs. Sophomore
Maya Illovsky led the Mules with 24 digs and served two aces, including one in the fifth set.
Forrest finished with 9 kills and 4 blocks.
