Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Nets First Win

Junior Karolyn Kawa scored her second career goal early in the first half to account for all the scoring as the Muhlenberg women's soccer team defeated Gwynedd Mercy for its first win of the season.

The win was also the first at Muhlenberg for new head coach Kelly Wakeman.

Despite a first half in which they took 10 shots, the Mules could not find the back of the net. They didn't need much time to break through in the second half, with Kawa scoring just 96 seconds in.

Sophomore Mia Mulin set up the goal by taking a long pass from freshman Lindsay Scott, beating her defender on the left sideline and passing the ball to sophomore Isabel Schwartz at the top of the box. A Griffin back knocked the ball away but sent it right to Kawa, who beat the Gwynedd goalie with a blast to the far post.

Muhlenberg (1-0-1) continued to put on pressure the rest of the game, finishing with a 28-1 advantage in shots. Sophomore Cortney Blake had the best chance to double the lead but hit the post with about two minutes to play.

Junior Libby Juliano needed to make only one save to record her ninth career shutout.

Playing for the second time in less than 24 hours in warm, humid conditions, the Mules used their deep bench extensively. Every available field player saw action and contributed to Muhlenberg opening up a season with back-to-back shutouts for just the second time since 2000.
