It was a grand night for senior
Kelly Tornetta and the entire Muhlenberg volleyball team.
Tornetta became the fifth player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone and the Mules came back after dropping a marathon second set to defeat Haverford, 3-1, for their first Centennial Conference win of the season.
Tornetta came into the match six kills away from the coveted mark and got 10. Number 1,000 came in the second set with Muhlenberg trailing 18-17 and made Tornetta the first Mule in 14 years to reach the milestone.
The Mules (10-3, 1-1), who won the first set 25-21, wound up falling in the second, 35-33. It was the longest set in program history since volleyball moved to 25-point scoring; the previous record was 31-29 against Washington College two years ago. Muhlenberg's longest set ever was a 44-42 marathon against Mary Washington in 2006, under 30-point scoring rules.
Muhlenberg rebounded to take control early in the third set. After a Ford service error gave the Mules a 17-13 lead, junior
Madison Forrest served out the set, with two kills by Tornetta capping the 25-13 win.
Muhlenberg broke away from a 14-14 tie to take the fourth set, 25-18, to clinch the match. Appropriately, the match ended on a kill by Tornetta.
Junior
Tara Register led the Mule attack with 15 kills, one off her career high, and added 15 digs. Junior
Maggie Enestvedt (13 kills, 14 digs) and senior
Shannon Hubert (39 assists, 17 digs) also recorded double-doubles.
Sophomore
Maya Illovsky led five Muhlenberg players in double figures in digs with 22.
The Mules have reached double figures in wins in 27 of the last 28 years.
