As it has all season, the Muhlenberg men's basketball battled from behind in its final home game of the season, but Ursinus had too much firepower and ruined Senior Night with a 100-85 win.
The Mules (11-13, 9-8) rebounded from an 0-3 Centennial Conference start to enter the final week of the regular season with a shot at the CC playoffs. They needed to win both of their games and get some help, but the loss to Ursinus eliminated them.
Prior to the game, Muhlenberg honored its five senior players -
Alex Mitton,
Nick Rindock,
Nigel Long,
Owen McLeod and
JeanLee Baez - along with senior manager Ethan Schorr and senior cheerleaders Thea Doolittle and Gabrielle Hines. The five senior players started the game, with Mitton and Long making their first career starts.
McLeod scored a career-high 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting in his final home appearance. Rindock, who also was honored in the pregame ceremony for scoring his 1,000th career point, finished with 14, and Baez added 11 on 5-of-6 shooting.
Muhlenberg led 9-5 early in the game before the Bears (15-9, 11-6) reeled off six straight points to take the lead. The Mules led only one time after that - 24-23 on sophomore
Ryan Gaynor's second three-pointer at the 10:17 mark - but kept within a possession or two for most of the remainder of the first half.
Down 50-47 at the break, Muhlenberg tied the score at 50-50 on McLeod's three-point play 11 seconds into the second half.
Ursinus finally shook the stubborn Mules by going on a 19-6 run, allowing only one field goal in a span of more than six minutes, to turn a 61-58 advantage to 80-64.
Junior
Erik Werheim scored 11 points off the bench, while sophomore
Matt Gnias recorded seven assists to push his season total to 91. Rindock's four assists gave him 93 on the year; he and Gnias are the first pair of Muhlenberg teammates with 90 assists in the same season since 1979.
