The Muhlenberg men's basketball team erased a 21-point first-half deficit to take a second-half lead, but McDaniel hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds to pull out a 75-72 win in the season finale for both teams.
Senior
Owen McLeod continued his late-season scoring surge with a team-high 23 points, while senior
Alex Mitton added eight in the final game of his career.
McLeod scored his team's first 17 points of the game, staking the Mules (11-14, 9-9) to a 17-11 lead in the first 6:30. But Muhlenberg managed only one point in the next 10 minutes, and the Green Terror (6-19, 3-15) opened up a 39-18 lead.Â
Mitton stopped the run with his second career three-pointer, but the Mules still trailed by 19 at the half.
The margin was 21 again, 52-31, early in the second half before back-to-back threes by senior
Nigel Long and Mitton started the comeback. Trailing 56-43 seven minutes into the half, Muhlenberg went on a 16-3 run to even the score at 59-all on a putback by freshman
Spencer Duke with 6:50 to go.
A three-pointer by junior
Brendan Hughes on the next possession gave the Mules their first lead since the first half. A three by sophomore
Matt Gnias at the 4:12 mark made it 68-63, but McDaniel reclaimed the lead with back-to-back threes.
Junior
Erik Werheim sank a pair of free throws with 1:01 on the clock to tie the score at 72. The Green Terror made the winning three off a kickout pass with 3.1 seconds left, and Muhlenberg could not attempt a game-tying shot.
The Mules made 14 three-pointers in the game, tying the school record for a CC game for the second time in eight days. They finished the season with 231 treys, far surpassing the previous school mark of 183.
McLeod
(pictured above) was 5-of-6 from three-point range. After scoring 20 points just once in the first 89 games of his career, he reached that mark in three of his last four games.
Senior
Nick Rindock scored three points in his last game to finish in a tie for 30th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,058 career points. Senior
JeanLee Baez closed out his career with three points, three rebounds and two assists, finishing the season with a field-goal percentage of .687.
