Postcards from Abroad: Alyssa Curtis

Postcards from Abroad journeys to Rabat, Morocco, to catch up with Alyssa Curtis of the Muhlenberg women's cross country and track & field teams.

Have you been able to travel at all during your time abroad?
For our nine-day orientation, we stayed in Meknѐs, Morocco. While there, we visited both Fes and the ancient city of Volubilis. With my program, I'll be visiting Chefchaouen, Tangier and the Sahara Desert, and we'll also be going to Córdoba and Granada in Spain. I would also love to hike the Middle Atlas Mountains and visit Marrakesh and Casablanca.

What has been your favorite part about being abroad?
Well, I'm a big fan of the food, especially the meloui and couscous. Also, strangely, it's been so fun being completely out of my element. I'm very used to having routines and knowing exactly what's going on but when almost everyone around you is speaking French, Darija or Arabic it makes things a bit more difficult. I never know what to expect with even mundane events which is a little scary but also really exciting.

Have you gotten any time to practice your sport while you have been abroad?
Yes! Since I'm a runner, it's pretty easy to find a time and a place to run. My home-stay is a five-minute walk from the beach so for my runs I've been running along the ocean.

What do you miss most about Muhlenberg?
I miss only walking five minutes maximum to class. The 30-minute walk to class has been quite the adjustment. In all seriousness, I miss my friends and my team a whole lot. I also miss competing, although I'm also enjoying running just to run without any immediate goals or set paces.

What made you want to go abroad?
I came to college knowing that I wanted to study abroad since I've never traveled abroad before. I also think it's really important to see as much of the world as possible and meet new people. As for my reason for choosing Rabat, Morocco, it was kind of just an impulsive decision (an impulsive decision that I'm really glad I made).

Any messages for your teammates back home?
Run your hearts out; I know you always do!
