Volleyball Wins in Four at Gettysburg

Junior Tara Register recorded a career-high 19 kills and senior Shannon Hubert reached another career milestone as the Muhlenberg volleyball team defeated Gettysburg, 3-1, in an important Centennial Conference match.

The Mules (15-6, 5-2), who reached the 15-win mark for the sixth consecutive year, began the day tied with the Bullets (15-5, 4-3) in the CC standings. They are now tied for third place with two weeks to go in the regular season.

Junior Maggie Enestvedt (15) and senior Kelly Tornetta (11) also reached double figures in kills, mostly off the passing of Hubert, whose 51 assists  were three short of the school record for a four-set match. She ran her school-record career total to an even 3,400, good for 15th place on the CC all-time list.

Sophomore Maya Illovsky (pictured above) returned to the lineup after missing the last six matches due to injury and recorded 27 digs.

Register had six kills in the first set alone, helping Muhlenberg come back from an early 8-2 deficit. The set came down to the wire, with back-to-back kills by Enestvedt and Tornetta breaking a 23-all tie and delivering the win for the Mules.

Muhlenberg trailed early in the second set as well but came back and took command on another long service run by sophomore Kendall Applegate - who had three in Wednesday's sweep at Ursinus. The Mules turned a 14-all tie into a 20-14 lead with Applegate serving, and a kill by senior Erica Schultz sealed the 25-20 win.

After Gettysburg prevented the sweep with a 25-22 win in the third set, Hubert served the first six points - four of which came on Register kills - of the fourth set. The Bullets closed to within a point three times but never could catch up, and a combined block by Enestvedt and junior Madison Forrest closed out the match, 25-22.
