Muhlenberg women's basketball senior
Brandi Vallely scored her 1,000th career point as part of her team's 89-55 victory over Ursinus.
Â
Entering the night with 995 career points, Vallely drained a three-pointer 15 seconds into the game and with 1:23 left in the opening period went to the free throw line, where she sank both shots to reach the milestone. In fitting fashion, number 11 for the Mules became the 11th member of Muhlenberg's 1000-point club, and she finished her historic night with 11 assists to go with 10 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Â
Senior
Rachel Plotke led the Mules in scoring with 25 points, tying her career-high. She shot 9-for-16 from the field, making a career-best seven three-pointers. Plotke has now eclipsed 200 career three-pointers (206), moving into a tie for seventh in Centennial Conference history, and is also closing in on 1,000 career points, needing 40 to join Vallely in the club.
Â
Senior
Chelsea Gary poured in 21 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field and 7-for-10 on free throws.
Â
Plotke sank four of her triples in the first period in helping the 16th-ranked Mules (16-1, 11-1 CC) jump out to a 29-13 advantage. Muhlenberg then held the Bears (9-9, 6-7 CC) to seven points in the second period and extended its lead by going on a 10-0 run. Junior
Sara Dilly scored five of her seven points as part of Muhlenberg's run, capped off by a Gary layup off a feed from Vallely.
Â
The Mules expanded their lead to 31 at halftime and the margin stayed near 30 through the second half.
Â
As a team, Muhlenberg shot 50.8 percent (32-63) from the field against a team coming into the night ranked 19th in Division III in field-goal percentage defense and had not allowed more than 50 points in each of its last four regulation games. The Mules also dominated on the boards, 42-19, with senior
Christina Manning grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
Â
The victory is Muhlenberg's sixth this season by 30 or more points. The Mules also moved into sole possession of first place in the CC standings, with second-place Gettysburg having the night off.
