Haley Fedak and
Hayley Peterson pitched matching complete-game five-hitters as the Muhlenberg softball team swept a doubleheader at defending Centennial Conference champion Haverford.
The Mules (9-11, 5-1) took the first game, 2-1, and the nightcap, 3-0, to move into first place in the CC by percentage points over McDaniel (6-1-1). Muhlenberg's 5-1 CC start is its best since 2014, and it's come without the benefit of a home game. The Mules have played their first three CC doubleheaders on the road; their next four are at home.
Fedak improved to 3-1 in the opener, striking out seven batters, including four of the first six she faced. She allowed a run in the third but did not permit another Ford runner to reach third base. Fedak was helped out in the bottom of the sixth when senior
Courtney Simon caught a soft liner and stepped on second for an unassisted double play. She needed no help finishing the game, however, striking out the final two hitters with the potential tying run on second base.
Peterson was even more impressive in earning her third win in five days. She struck out four and did not walk a batter for her third shutout in her last five starts. The first two batters of the game reached base, but Peterson worked out of that jam and allowed only one other runner past first base, finishing the game by retiring the last eight batters.
Muhlenberg managed only four hits itself in the opener, but three were timely two-out hits. Simon singled in the game's first run with two outs in the third after three walks loaded the bases. With two outs in the fifth, junior
Karissa Astrella doubled and scored what proved to be the winning run when the next batter, sophomore
Kristina Qualben, singled.
Freshman
Sarah Schubert started both run-scoring innings for the Mules in the second game. She singled with one out in the third, stole second and came in on a single by sophomore
Allyson Sweeney. Astrella singled in a second run in the same inning.
In the fifth, Schubert
(pictured above) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Sweeney's ground ball.
Junior
Amelia Shelley went 3-for-3 with a double in the second game.
