Baseball Bats Come Alive in Second Game

The Muhlenberg baseball team broke out on offense in the second game of its second day in Myrtle Beach, gaining a split of its doubleheader with a 7-4 win against Staten Island.

The Dolphins (3-1) won the first game, 4-0, handing the Mules (3-3) their third straight shutout loss.

Muhlenberg scored its seven runs in two innings, with three in the third and four in the fifth. Junior Taylor Vazquez started both rallies, with a leadoff walk and single, and senior John Icaza drove in runs in each big inning.

In the third, Icaza hit a two-run single, then went on to steal second and third and come around on a passed ball.

Icaza's RBI single in the fifth was followed by a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Matt Riebesell. Sophomore Stephen Koester brought in the final run of the inning with a single.

The offense helped make a winner of freshman Ryan Kaverick, who pitched into the fifth in his first career start. Senior Christopher Bunero (pictured above) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run to pick up his second save of the season.

Sophomore Chris Grillo went 2-for-3 in both games. Koester also had a pair of hits in the opener. The Mules' best chance to score in the first game came on a two-out single by sophomore Justin Revel in the second, but freshman Billy Brittingham, who had singled, was thrown out at the plate.

Junior Sam Kasten allowed only three hits in six innings in taking the first-game loss.
