The Muhlenberg baseball team pounded out 19 hits and scored in six of nine innings to win its second straight game, 13-8 against Catholic.
Sophomore
Matt Riebesell led the offensive onslaught by going 5-for-6 with six RBI. Junior
Eric Reitmeyer added three hits, and he and sophomore
Chris Grillo scored three runs apiece.
The big win came against a Catholic team that came in with a 6-1 record and team ERA of 2.38.
The game was tied 8-8 before the Mules (4-3) took the lead for good with a five-run seventh. Sophomore
Jon Capra and junior
Taylor Vazquez led off with singles, and Grillo walked to load the bases. One out later, senior
John Icaza singled in the go-ahead run, and Riebesell followed with a two-run single up the middle to make it 11-8.
Icaza scored on a passed ball, and senior
Robbie Hopes doubled in Riebesell to cap the rally.
Senior
Ryan Banks worked three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win, striking out three batters and getting some clutch outs. In the seventh, he snagged a line drive to start an inning-ending 1-3 double play and escape a bases-loaded jam. The Cardinals had a runner on second with nobody out in the ninth before Banks
(pictured above) recorded a strikeout, then ended the game with a 4-6-3 double play.
In addition to his two-run single in the winning rally, Riebesell drove in runs in the first, fourth and sixth to help stake Muhlenberg to an 8-5 lead. His five hits were one short of the school record and his six RBI were two shy of the mark held by, among others, Icaza.
Grillo, Icaza, Hopes, Vazquez and senior
Thomas Yohe all contributed two hits.
