The Muhlenberg baseball team came away with an extra-inning victory to split its doubleheader with Penn State Berks.
Â
The Mules (7-8) overcame a game-tying seventh inning rally by the Nittany Lions (4-7) to win the first game 4-2. Freshman
Billy BrittinghamÂ
(pictured above) smacked a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded to provide Muhlenberg with the eventual winning run. Sophomore
Chris Grillo singled home another run two batters later to add insurance to the lead.
Senior
Christopher Bunero finished off the Nittany Lions in the bottom half of the eighth, recording a 1-2-3 inning to seal the win.
Â
The Mules only needed four batters to take a 2-0 lead. Grillo singled to start the game and junior
Eric Reitmeyer reached on an error to put runners on second and third. Senior
John Icaza singled home Grillo and sophomore
Matt Riebesell hit a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Reitmeyer to come home as well.
Reibesell started the eighth-inning rally for Muhlenberg with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Two batters later, senior
Thomas Yohe doubled down the right field line, advancing Reibesell to third. Sophomore
Jon Capra was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up Brittingham's game-winning hit.
 Junior
Sam Kasten started the game by only allowing three hits and one walk through his first six innings on the mound. He recorded his seventh strikeout of the game to start the seventh but was pulled after walking two batters to set up the Nittany Lion rally.
Â
Muhlenberg produced 12 hits in the first game but ran into some tough pitching in the second game to fall 2-0. Freshman
Matthew D'Ambrosia pitched a complete game for the Mules, striking out four batters while scattering six hits and two walks over six innings of work.
Â
Grillo led the offense with three hits for the day to go with a run scored and an RBI. Icaza, Reitmeyer and senior
Robbie Hopes each contributed two hits over the doubleheader as well.
