Long Ball and Pitching Helps Baseball To WIn

The Muhlenberg baseball team scored three early runs and four pitchers held Scranton to six hits in a 4-1 victory.

Freshman Billy Brittingham provided the Mules (8-8) with a two-run home run, the first of his career, in the second inning. He crushed a fastball off a building out beyond the right field fence to put the Mules on the board first.

The two early runs would be all the pitching staff needed, with the four arms striking out nine Scranton batters and stranding 11 Royals on base.

Freshman Ryan Kaverick started on the mound, scattering four hits and two walks over four innings while striking out three. Sophomore RJ Hennessey came on first in relief and pitched his way out of a jam in the sixth with two strikeouts sandwiching a putout on a fielder's choice and ending a Scranton scoring threat. Hennessey was credited with his second victory of the season.

The Royals (8-9) scratched home a run in the seventh to make it 3-1, but junior Austin Disher retired the side in order in the eighth. Senior Christopher Bunero then closed out the game with a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the season.

The Mules tacked on insurance runs in the third and eighth innings. Sophomore Chris Grillo led off both innings, singling in the third and walking in the eighth. Sophomore Justin Revel (pictured above) laid down sacrifice bunts to move Grillo each time, setting Grillo up to score Muhlenberg's third and fourth runs.

Four of the Mules' five hits in the game were of the extra-base variety. Brittingham also doubled to right center to finish the day 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Sophomore Matt Riebesell hit the second triple of his career into the right center gap in the sixth and junior Eric Reitmeyer doubled for the first time this season in his first at-bat.
