Baseball Wins on Walkoff Single

Sophomore Matt Riebesell lined a walkoff single up the middle to give the Muhlenberg baseball team a 6-5 victory over Penn College.

The Mules (5-7) rallied back from an early deficit to take a 5-3 lead, but the Wildcats (5-4) tied the game in the eighth to setup the late game drama. Freshman Brenden Weiss reached on an error to start the bottom of the ninth and sophomore Chris Grillo moved him to third on a bunt single. Riebesell then laced a 0-1 fastball through the middle to bring home Weiss and win the game.

Riebesell's hit gave him his team-high second RBI of the game. Senior John Icaza went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored to go with two stolen bases. Senior Thomas Yohe and junior Troy Vazquez each finished with two hits and a run batted in as well.

Senior Christopher Bunero earned his first victory of the season by getting the final four outs for Muhlenberg. Junior Sam Kasten (pictured above) started on the mound and struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings while giving up only five hits and one earned run. He fanned at least one batter in each of his innings pitched.

Riebesell brought home Vazquez on a fielder's choice for the first Mule run of the game in the fifth. An errant throw allowed Riebesell to advance to second and another run to score, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Muhlenberg took the lead an inning later. Yohe doubled deep to right center to bring home senior Robbie Hopes, and Vazquez plated Yohe with a ground ball single through the right side to make it 4-3 Mules. Hopes added to the lead with an RBI single in the seventh.

Freshman Matthew D'Ambrosia struck out three batters in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
