Women's Basketball Clinches Playoff Berth with Big Comeback

Junior Chelsea Gary tied her career high with 24 points to lead the Muhlenberg women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 84-65 win against Gettysburg in an important Centennial Conference game.

With the win, the Mules (16-7, 13-5) clinched a CC playoff berth with nine days remaining in the regular season. They started the game in a virtual three-way tie for second place with Gettysburg and Dickinson.

Gary pulled down 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Junior Brandi Vallely also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 assists, and junior Rachel Plotke scored 19 points. Sophomore Sara Dilly finished with 12.

The Bullets (15-7, 11-6) shot 58.8 percent from the field in the first quarter to take a 27-19 lead and opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to extend their margin to 14. Muhlenberg closed the gap to eight by halftime, then outscored Gettysburg 50-23 in the second half to run away.

After the Mules tied the score at 46 in the third quarter on a layup by Gary, Gettysburg hit a three-pointer with 5:22 left in the quarter to go up 49-46. Muhlenberg allowed only four field goals the rest of the game.

A jumper by sophomore Sara Dilly (pictured above) gave the Mules the lead for good at 50-49, and she hit a three-pointer later in the quarter, which ended with Muhlenberg ahead 57-53.

Gary scored six points in an 11-2 run to open the fourth quarter, giving the Mules a 13-point lead.

Muhlenberg shot 20-for-20 from the foul line, becoming the second CC team to be perfect in a game with at least 20 attempts. The Mules also had a 46-34 rebounding advantage against a Gettysburg team that came in leading the CC and ranked in the top 30 in Division III in rebounding margin.

With her 21st career double-figure assists game, Vallely - named to the Academic All-District team earlier in the day - moved into second place on the Mules' all-time list with 433 in her career, just 20 away from tying the school record. She is in sixth place in CC history.

Senior Maggie Zerbe, playing in her final scheduled home game, finished with nine rebounds, four points and three assists.
