Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Streak Ends at Hopkins

The Muhlenberg volleyball team witnessed its winning streak come to a close at 12 matches, falling in three sets to nationally ranked Johns Hopkins.

The Mules (18-3, 3-1 CC) came within one victory of tying the school record set during the 2014 campaign. Prior to the loss, Muhlenberg was one of two teams in the conference to have a winning streak of at least 10 matches – the other being Hopkins, who came in on a 13-match streak of its own.

The Blue Jays (16-2, 5-0 CC), ranked 23rd in the AVCA Division III poll, jumped in front early in the first set but Muhlenberg fought back with kills from junior Kelly Tornetta and sophomore Maggie Enestvedt helping the Mules on a 5-0 run late in the stanza. Hopkins held off the Mules the rest of the way though and earned a 25-13 first-set victory

Muhlenberg played tough in the second set, with an ace from Tornetta cutting Hopkins' lead in the stanza to five. Muhlenberg made a late push with kills from Tornetta and Enestvedt making it 24-18, but the Blue Jays won the next point to take the second set.

Hopkins closed the match with a 25-10 third-set victory.

Sophomore Tara Register led the Mules with seven kills to go with five digs. Junior Shannon Hubert recorded 14 assists and eight digs to lead the team, making her season total of 687 assists already the ninth most in school history. Tornetta registered five kills to move into 11th place on the Muhlenberg all-time kills list (736), and Enestvedt matched her with five kills as well.

Muhlenberg accomplished many great feats during its 12-match winning streak. Along the way, Muhlenberg defeated two NCAA tournament teams from last season (Susquehanna and Ramapo), dealt Scranton its first and only loss of the season thus far, battled back to win in five sets four times and dropped a total of only 12 sets in 12 matches.
