Volleyball Sweeps CC Match with Ursinus

The Muhlenberg volleyball team picked up an important Centennial Conference victory by sweeping Ursinus, 3-0.

The Mules improved their overall record to 19-3, marking the second-fastest point in a season in which they reached 19 wins. The Mules started the 2014 season 19-2.

By improving to 4-1 in the conference, Muhlenberg sits in a tie for third place in the league standings with Swarthmore, trailing only Johns Hopkins (6-0) and Franklin & Marshall (5-1). Two of Muhlenberg's five remaining CC matches are against F&M and Swarthmore, and two more are against the teams tied for fifth-place – McDaniel (4-2) and Gettysburg (4-2).

Junior setter Shannon Hubert recorded 23 assists and passed 2,300 assists for her career (2,314) and 700 assists (713) for the season in the process. She also finished with seven digs and two aces.

Sophomore Maggie Enestvedt led the Mules with 14 kills while hitting .480 and blocking four Ursinus attacks. Sophomore Tara Register finished with an even eight kills and eight digs, and freshman libero Rebecca Shear led the team with nine digs.

Muhlenberg won eight of the first nine points to build a first-set lead. Sophomore Madison Forrest registered three of her match-high five blocks during the run. Enestvedt finished the stanza with a kill to make it 25-10 in Muhlenberg's favor.

The Mules also got out to an early advantage in the second set, but the Bears (5-14, 0-6 CC) battled back to eventually tie the set at 11. Another Enestvedt kill returned the lead to the Mules, and they won the next three points as well thanks in part to two aces from freshman Maya Illovsky (pictured above). Muhlenberg maintained its lead the rest of the way, earning a 25-19 second-stanza win.

The Bears jumped out in front to start the third set with many of Muhlenberg's reserves on the court. Trailing 16-13, the Mules rallied back with junior Kelly Tornetta recording her fourth kill of the match and then serving out a 5-0 rally to make it 18-16. Tornetta later registered her fifth and final kill to provide a 25-20 set and match victory.

The Mules next host a tri-match against CC-rival Gettysburg and Clarkson on Saturday. The team will be sporting "Rally for Reagan" warmup shirts to support the fight against pediatric cancer and will also be soliciting donations at the match. All proceeds go to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
