The Muhlenberg volleyball team solidified its Centennial Conference playoff chances with a come-from-behind 3-1 win at Franklin & Marshall.
Both teams entered the match in a virtual tie for second place with just one CC loss. The win puts the Mules (21-4, 6-1) in sole possession of second with CC matches against McDaniel (4-3), Swarthmore (5-2) and Washington (2-6) remaining.
A balanced offensive attack paved the way for Muhlenberg, with four players reaching double figures in kills. Junior
Kelly Tornetta led the way with 15, putting her over 300 kills for the second straight season, junior
Erica Schultz added 11, and sophomores
Tara Register and
Maggie Enestvedt pitched in with 10 apiece.
Schultz
(pictured above) notched her 11 kills with only one error in 21 attempts for a .476 hitting percentage. It was the second straight CC match, and the fourth time this season, that she made just one error while finishing with at least nine kills.
Junior
Shannon Hubert ran the offense with 42 assists and added seven kills of her own. She also recorded 16 digs.
Register established a career high with 20 digs, and
Maya Illovsky added 16 to break the school record for digs in a season by a freshman (370).
In a rematch of last year's first-round CC playoff showdown, won by Muhlenberg in three sets, the Diplomats jumped to the early advantage by scoring the final four points of the first set for a 25-22 win.
The Mules fell behind 4-0 in the second set and were down 17-11 before flipping the match around with a 14-6 run. Hubert served four straight points to give Muhlenberg its first lead at 24-21. After F&M scored the next two points, Enestvedt ended the thrilling 25-23 set with a kill. Register had 12 of her 20 digs in the second set alone.
F&M took a 4-0 lead again in the third set, but once again Muhlenberg came back. The Mules led 21-19 before closing out the set with the final four points, two coming on Tornetta kills.
Muhlenberg appeared to be in charge of the fourth set, opening up a 20-13 lead, but the Diplomats rallied by scoring the next five points to close to within two. That would be as close as it would get, though, as kills by sophomore
Stefanie Mutter and Tornetta closed out the Mule win, 25-20.Â
The Mules' 21 wins are the fourth-most in program history.
