Volleyball Clinches Playoff Berth

The Muhlenberg volleyball team clinched a Centennial Conference playoff berth for the fourth time in five years by defeating McDaniel, 3-1.

The Mules (23-4, 7-1 CC) currently sit in second place in the CC standings with two matches remaining. Muhlenberg also dispatched Lancaster Bible, 3-1, in its second match of the day. The 23 wins for the season are the third most in school history, trailing the 2014 (25) and 1992 (27) season totals.

Junior Kelly Tornetta and sophomore Maggie Enestvedt each finished with double-digit kill totals in both matches. Enestvedt led the team with 20 kills against McDaniel and 15 against Lancaster Bible. Tornetta (pictured above) followed up a double-double (15 kills, 10 digs) vs. McDaniel with 13 kills in the second match, passing not only her total kills from last season (327) but also 800 kills in her career (813). She is now the 10th different Mule to reach 800 career kills.

Junior setter Shannon Hubert recorded 71 assists for the day, with 42 of them coming against the Green Terror (15-7, 4-4 CC). She passed both 900 assists for the season (910) and 2,500 assists in her career (2,511). She also finished with 24 digs.

Freshman Maya Illovsky passed 400 digs for the season, making 37 on the day to run her season total to 407. Junior Erica Schultz blocked three attacks in each match to go with 18 kills, and sophomore Tara Register hit seven aces to go with 19 digs and nine kills.

The first set between Muhlenberg and McDaniel was a back-and-forth affair until two Enestvedt kills broke a 14-14 tie in Muhlenberg's favor. The Mules kept their lead the rest of the stanza, and Enestvedt finished off the set with another kill to win it 25-19.

The Green Terror took an early advantage in the second set, but Muhlenberg tied it back up at 7-7 thanks to a 4-0 run that included two Register kills. The Mules later went on a 6-0 run to go up 14-10, but McDaniel made a long run of its own to retake the lead. The Green Terror held the advantage until Muhlenberg made a late push, with an Illovsky ace tying the stanza at 23-23. A Tornetta kill gave Muhlenberg the lead, and a McDaniel error later provided a 26-24 second set victory and a 2-0 advantage.

The Green Terror stayed alive by taking the third set and jumped in front early in the fourth set as well. Muhlenberg, however, took the lead back on a block by Enestvedt and Schultz and increased its advantage to as many as six on a Tornetta kill later in the stanza. McDaniel made one final push trailing 22-16, but kills from Tornetta and Enestvedt sandwiched a McDaniel error to give Muhlenberg the final three points it needed for a 25-21 set and match win.

Muhlenberg jumped in front early in both its first and second set against the Chargers (12-14). Junior Brenna Littleson recorded two aces during an 8-0 run in the first set the Mules eventually won 25-16. Enestvedt recorded six of her 15 kills along with an ace in the second set in helping Muhlenberg to a 25-14 set win and a 2-0 match lead.

The Chargers won a close third set to keep the match going, but Muhlenberg made quick work of its opponent in the fourth set, going on 6-0 and 7-0 runs that led to a 25-8 set victory.
