The Muhlenberg women's soccer team overcame an early goal to come back and tie its non-conference match against Kean.
The Cougars (10-5-1) scored on their first shot only 4:38 into the match, but the Mules (4-7-3) were able to bear down defensively the rest of the way. Their defensive efforts paid off when sophomore
Alyssa Rose scored the game-tying goal in the 62nd minute.
Going on the attack, freshman
Danni Steigerwald crossed the ball in and connected her pass with freshman
Mia Mulin. Mulin's header was barely kept out of the goal by the Kean goalkeeper, and the attempted clearance found the feet of Rose
(pictured above). The sophomore midfielder took one touch then fired a bullet that ricocheted off a Kean defender and past the keeper into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Muhlenberg sophomore goalkeeper
Libby Juliano saved three of her seven shots in the match in the last 15 minutes of the second period, including a leaping save to deflect a shot off the crossbar and out of danger.
The Mules attempted a flurry of shots in the first overtime. Sophomore
Casarah Morales' shot came close to ending the match, but the ball deflected off the crossbar. Steigerwald then attempted two quick rebound shots that were both blocked.
In the second overtime, Kean attempted all five shots of the period. Juliano made her final save on the lone shot on goal, and the backline of Morales, junior
Makenzie O'Brien and sophomores
Madison Ingling and
Karolyn Kawa pressured the Cougars other four shots to miss the target.
Muhlenberg returns to Centennial Conference play Saturday when the team travels to McDaniel.
