Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Reaches 20 Wins

The Muhlenberg volleyball team earned its 20th victory of the season by sweeping Gettysburg, 3-0, as part of a home tri-match.

The Mules (20-4, 5-1 CC) have now achieved 20 wins in a season 11 times in program history, including four of the last five years. The win over the Bullets (18-4, 4-3 CC) keeps Muhlenberg in third place in the CC standings with four conference matches remaining.

Muhlenberg in its second match of the day faced a tough Clarkson squad and battled back from down 2-0 to force a fifth set before ultimately falling, 3-2. The Golden Knights (13-7) have made the NCAA Tournament in each of the previous seven years.

Junior Kelly Tornetta recorded double-doubles in each match, leading her team with 13 kills and 12 digs against Gettysburg followed by a career-high 21 kills to go with 14 digs vs. Clarkson. Tornetta moved into 10th place on Muhlenberg's all-time kills list (770) and needs seven more to reach 300 kills for a second straight season.

Junior setter Shannon Hubert registered 84 assists, 24 digs and nine kills on the day. She moved into second on Muhlenberg's career assists list (2,398) and now has the sixth-most assists in a season (797) in team history.

Sophomore Tara Register also finished with a double-double in the Clarkson match, recording 10 kills and 19 digs. Register also had double-digit digs (12) against Gettysburg. Sophomore Maggie Enestvedt registered double-digit kills in each match, recording 12 vs. Gettysburg and 16 against Clarkson.

Freshman Maya Illovsky led the Mules with 53 digs on the day, including a season-high 36 vs. Clarkson. Junior Erica Schultz blocked seven attacks to lead the team, giving her 152 blocks in her career. She also finished with 15 kills.

Muhlenberg battled from behind in its first set against the Bullets, with a Tornetta kill giving her team the lead at 15-14. A 4-0 run bookend by kills from Enestvedt and Hubert upped Muhlenberg's advantage to 22-18, but Gettysburg fought back to regain a one-point advantage. The Mules won the next three points, however, to close out the set at 26-24.

The Mules opened up a big lead early in the second set with a Register kill giving them a 21-11 advantage. Kills from Enestvedt and Schultz helped Muhlenberg close the stanza at 25-16.

Gettysburg continued to battle in the third set by taking the advantage, but a big Register block tied the stanza at 9-9, and the Mules won eight of the next nine points. The Bullets made a run of their own to even the set, but Enestvedt closed the match with two more kills at the end to give her team a 25-20 third set win and the match victory.

Clarkson won two very close sets – 25-23, 25-23 – to start Muhlenberg's second match. The Mules were resilient though, winning the third set, 25-18, and gutting out a 26-24 fourth set victory to force a fifth-set tiebreaker.

The Mules fell behind early in the fifth set, but made a late rally thanks to three Tornetta kills and a block from Enestvedt and sophomore Madison Forrest (pictured above), one of three for her in the match. The Golden Knights, however, closed the match by winning the final two points and taking the fifth set, 15-8.

All four of Muhlenberg's losses this season have been against teams who made the NCAA tournament last season.
