One long shot is all the Muhlenberg women's soccer team needed to defeat Ursinus, 1-0.
The game was less than eight minutes away from overtime when senior
Carly DeNigris sent a high lofting shot from well outside the box toward the Ursinus goal. The ball went over the head of the goalie, hit the inside of the post just under the crossbar and bounced into the back of the net. It was the third goal of the season for DeNigris, who leads the Mules (4-6-2, 2-2-2) with 10 points.
The Muhlenberg defense held on for the remaining 7:39 to complete its fifth shutout of the season. Sophomore
Libby Juliano, who entered the game with a Centennial Conference-leading save percentage of .886, improved to .896 by making four saves.
The victory extended the Mules' Varsity Field unbeaten streak to nine matches (5-0-4) heading into Saturday night's home game against Gettysburg.
Eight of the last nine games between Muhlenberg and Ursinus (1-8-2, 1-4-1) have been decided by a single goal.
