The Muhlenberg men's soccer team scored three second-half goals, two by junior
Kevin Irving, to defeat Lehigh Valley rival Moravian, 3-1.
The victory gave Muhlenberg a 2-1 lead in the 2017-18 Matte Award standings. The next scheduled Matte contest is the Makuvek Cup in men's golf tomorrow.
Despite outshooting the Greyhounds 14-1 in the first half, the Mules (3-7-2) went into the break scoreless. They still have not allowed a first-half goal since the first game of the season.
Early in the second half, Muhlenberg thought it had broken through with a goal, but the referee ruled otherwise. Moravian (6-3-3) then caught the Mules on a counterattack and scored to take a 1-0 lead.
The Greyhounds kept on the attack over the next seven minutes, but the Mules took over from there. In the final 30 minutes of the contest, Moravian took only two shots, and one came in the last few seconds.
Muhlenberg netted the equalizer with 29:10 left when sophomore
Matthew Athanas-Linden headed in a cross from freshman
Cameron Miller for his fourth goal of the season.
Just 64 seconds later, freshman
Mark Winter drew a foul in the box. Irving
(pictured above) buried the penalty kick to give the Mules a 2-1 lead.
Irving added an insurance goal with 5:47 left to cap his first career multiple-goal game.
Junior
Jordan Schreer made four saves in goal.
The win snapped a nine-game winless streak in which Muhlenberg played several close games against top competition. The Mules, who entered the game with the third-toughest schedule in Division III according to the NCAA, went into overtime against the fourth-, sixth- and 10th-ranked teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region and the top-ranked team in the South Atlantic Region.
