After playing through 97 minutes of rain and gusty winds, the Muhlenberg men's soccer team defeated regionally ranked Centennial Conference opponent Swarthmore 2-1 in overtime on a game-winning penalty kick goal.
With the first overtime winding down, the Mules (3-4-2, 1-1-1 CC) were awarded a corner kick opportunity in the 97th minute. Sophomore
Christian Wieand (pictured above) took the kick and hit it short toward a Garnet (5-4, 1-2 CC) defender in the box. The ball hit off the defender's hand to draw a foul and set up the penalty kick opportunity.
Wieand elected to take the penalty shot and nailed a low liner to the back left corner of the net for the "Golden Goal" winner. The midfielder now has two goals this season, both of which are from penalty kicks.
The Garnet scored first, striking in the 17th minute on their first shot of the game. Muhlenberg was held scoreless in the first half despite outshooting Swarthmore in the half 6-2.
Muhlenberg withstood three early shot attempts from the Garnet before countering with their first goal of the match. Junior
Anthony Carracino attempted a shot in the 60th minute that was blocked by a defender. Wieand collected the ball for Muhlenberg and crossed it back into Carracino, who then passed to freshman
Pete Luther. The forward one-timed a shot through the Swarthmore defense and past the keeper for his team-high fifth goal this season, tying the match at 1-1.
Mules goalkeeper
Alex Tomko played strong after giving up the early goal and made three saves.
Muhlenberg outshot Swarthmore in the match 19-11 and had the 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. The Mules have now won two straight matches against the Garnet when playing at Varsity Field.
