Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hunter Heads Home Winner for Women's Soccer

Freshman Sarah Hunter headed in a game-winning goal late in the second half as Muhlenberg women's soccer defeated crosstown rival DeSales 2-1 at home.

The Mules (3-5) defense withstood four Bulldogs (4-6) shots in the second half with the game tied at 1-1 before striking in the 86th minute. After DeSales kicked the ball out of bounds, sophomore Makenzie O'Brien threw the ball into junior Carly DeNigris on the right side of the field.

DeNigris immediately crossed into the box to find Hunter. With only the goalkeeper between her and the net, Hunter headed the ball into the left side of the net past the diving keeper for the eventual winner. The goal was Hunter's second this season.

DeNigris also played an assisting role in the Mules' first goal of the match. Muhlenberg was awarded a corner kick in the 19th minute after freshman Danni Steigerwald battled with a DeSales defender in a footrace down the sideline before the defender kicked it out.

DeNigris attempted the ensuing corner and fired the ball deep into the box. Freshman Alyssa Rose positioned herself in front of the defense for the header and connected on the ball, scoring the first goal of her career to tie the match at 1-1.

The two teams each had seven shots in the match but Muhlenberg had the 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Marissa D'Alessandro recorded three saves in the match, including one in the 71st minute where she came almost out of the box and slide-tackled the ball on a breakaway to prevent a possible game-winner for DeSales.

Muhlenberg is now 4-1-1 against its crosstown rival, having won two straight meetings.
