Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Edged Despite Late Rally

After falling behind at Gettysburg 2-0, the Muhlenberg men's soccer team climbed back in the second half to tie the match with 15 minutes left, but Gettysburg came away with a late goal to eventually win 3-2.

The Bullets (5-1-1, 2-0 CC) struck first after drawing a foul in the box on a corner kick that set up a penalty kick shot. Henry Smith put the ball into the back left corner as Mules goalkeeper Alex Tomko dove the opposite direction, putting the Bullets up 1-0.

A few minutes later, the Mules (2-4-2, 0-2 CC) set themselves up for an opportunity to tie the match with a free kick from sophomore Kevin Irving, who found sophomore Christian Wieand's head in the box. A Gettysburg defender tried to boot the ball out, but it instead went right to Muhlenberg senior Nick Sarkos. Sarkos one-timed the ball toward the net and an otherwise goal was blocked by a Gettysburg defender to keep it 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 heading into the second half. Gettysburg added their second goal of the match in the 65th minute.

Less than a minute later, Muhlenberg answered when junior Anthony Carracino passed from the right side into the box and found freshman Pete Luther, who tapped the redirect past the Gettysburg goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the season.

Once the Mules broke through for their first goal, it did not take long for them to score again. Less than 10 minutes later, a free kick opportunity from sophomore Christian Wieand found Luther in the box, who headed the ball to freshman Wyatt Dessel. Dessel fired the ball into the wide open net for his first career goal, tying the match at 2-2 with about 15 minutes left.

The match looked to be heading to overtime, but Gettysburg poked a loose ball past Tomko with three minutes left to earn the victory.

Tomko finished the match with eight saves for the Mules. Muhlenberg won the corner kick battle in the match, taking eight corners to Gettysburg's five attempts.
