Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Plays DeSales to Draw

The Muhlenberg men's soccer team battled DeSales to a 1-1 draw, the team's second consecutive match ending in a tie.

The Mules (2-3-2, 0-0-1 CC) and the Bulldogs (3-4-1) were both held scoreless in the first half, with both teams not able to take advantage of limited shot on goal chances and being held to four shots apiece.

Muhlenberg pressed offensively at the start of the second half and their aggressiveness paid off in the 55th minute. The Mules advanced the ball into the box and drew a hard foul by a DeSales defender, setting up a penalty kick opportunity.

Sophomore Christian Wieand (pictured above) elected to take the shot, shooting the ball dead center into the net past the keeper for his first goal of the season and the first of his career to put Muhlenberg up 1-0.

DeSales could not get much going offensively, attempting one shot that goalkeeper Alex Tomko saved over the next thirty minutes of play. With time running down, a foul was called on Muhlenberg to set up a Bulldog free kick just past midfield. The kick was sent into a crowd in the box and deflected into the net for the tying goal with three seconds remaining.

Neither team attempted a shot on net in the first overtime. DeSales got off four shots in the second overtime, with their one shot on goal being saved by Tomko. Senior Nick Sarkos fired off the final shot of the game for Muhlenberg, a laser from the middle just outside the box that sailed high over the goal.

Tomko played all 110 minutes in net for the Mules, making four saves. Muhlenberg outshot DeSales in the match 13-11.
