The Muhlenberg women's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a close 1-0 defeat at the hands of Gwynedd Mercy at Varsity Field.
The Mules (0-1) controlled possession for the majority of the game but fell behind in the 32nd minute when a Griffins (1-0) player scored off a long pass into the box, touching it past Muhlenberg goalkeeper
Marissa D'Alessandro and into the net.
Muhlenberg did not relent in the second half, attempting five of the team's eight shots on goal during that period. The closest scoring chance came when freshman
Danni Steigerwald fired a shot from the left to the near side that the Griffins goalkeeper was just able to get in front of to prevent the game-tying goal in the 63rd minute.
D'Alessandro played all ninety minutes in goal for the Mules and made two saves in her collegiate debut.

Danni Steigerwald,
