The Muhlenberg softball team split its sixth straight doubleheader, capturing the nightcap, 7-2, after dropping the opener, 3-1, at defending Centennial Conference champion McDaniel.
Extra-base hits played a role in all eight Mule runs, with seniors
Nicole Iannarone and
Taylor Trifiolis hitting home runs.
Trifiolis
(pictured above) belted her seventh career home run, a two-run blast, in the first inning of the second game as part of a 2-for-4 performance that lifted her CC-leading batting average to .433.
After the Green Terror (17-13, 7-5) tied the score with one in the first and one in the third, Muhlenberg (12-18, 5-5) broke the game open with a four-run fifth on back-to-back two-run doubles by sophomores
Karissa Astrella and
Amelia Shelley.
Shelley drove in the final run on a groundout in the seventh after sophomore
Hanna Caiola led off with a double.
Sophomore
Haley Fedak pitched a five-hitter to earn her fifth win of the season. She did not allow any earned runs after the first inning and finished strong, retiring the last 11 hitters, three by strikeout.
Iannarone's sixth-inning opposite-field home run accounted for the lone Mule run in the opening game. Senior
Amie DeFeo went 2-for-2.
Muhlenberg is one of six teams within two games of .500 in the tightly packed CC race. The Mules' three remaining CC doubleheaders are all against teams they are even with or ahead of in the standings.
