Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Comes Back in Second Game

The Muhlenberg baseball team came back from four runs down to force extra innings before falling, 6-4, to Staten Island in the second game of a doubleheader in Myrtle Beach. The Dolphins took the opener, 4-0, handing the Mules their first loss of the season.

Staten Island, a strong team that went 25-15 and won the City University of New York Athletic Conference championship last year, scored four runs in the opening inning of the nightcap. Muhlenberg matched that in the third with six straight hits to knock out the starting pitcher. Freshman Chris Grillo started the rally with a double and came in on a double by sophomore Eric Reitmeyer. Junior John Icaza followed with an RBI single.

After  double by senior Andrew Rava, consecutive RBI singles by juniors Robbie Hopes and Nick Lucas tied the score.

The game remained 4-4 through seven innings, with junior Ryan Banks getting an infield pop with the potential winning run on third in the top of the seventh.

Staten Island (3-1) scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth. The Mules (5-2) got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning but could not score.

Grillo, Icaza, Rava and Lucas each had two hits for Muhlenberg.

Reitmeyer (pictured above) went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles in the opener, but the Mules managed only one hit from the rest of the order and were shut out.
