Seniors
Tim Hofmann,
Connor Annese and
Sean Buecker were among the key contributors as the Muhlenberg baseball team swept Penn College, 2-1 and 12-4, in Myrtle Beach.
Hofmann and Annese combined on a four-hitter in the opener, and Buecker's single drove in the winning run in the nightcap.
The Mules (7-2) trailed 1-0 heading into the sixth inning of Game 1 when another senior,
Andrew Rava, led off with a single. Junior
Robbie Hopes followed with a single and, after a sacrifice, a passed ball brought in the tying run. Freshman
Jon Capra then singled in
Bobby Merle, pinch-running for Hopes, with the winning run.
Hofmann did not allow an earned run and got a big 6-4-3 double play with the potential tying run on third in the bottom of the sixth. He exited with two on and one out in the seventh. Annese
(pictured above left) walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, but then finished the game with a strikeout and a forceout to earn his first career save.
Rava and sophomore
Eric Reitmeyer each had two hits in the game.
Muhlenberg trailed 4-3 in the second game before erupting for nine runs against three Wildcat pitchers in the bottom of the sixth. After Hopes singled in Reitmeyer - who had walked to lead off the inning and stolen second - with the tying run, Buecker, in just the fifth at-bat of his career, singled up the middle to put the Mules ahead, 5-4.
Two more runs came in on bases-loaded walks to freshman
Matt Riebesell and sophomore
Taylor Vazquez, and freshman
Chris Grillo followed with a two-run single.
Hopes punctuated the uprising with a two-run double, his second hit of the inning, to cap a four-RBI day.
Junior
Adam Pracher (pictured above right) relieved in the top of the sixth after a leadoff double and retired the next three batters to keep the deficit at one. He pitched the seventh to finish off his first career win, recording a strikeout along the way.
Grillo had two hits and junior
John Icaza drove in two runs in the nightcap.
