Baseball Walks Off with Fifth Straight

Box Score

The Muhlenberg baseball team came back from a 6-1 deficit, scoring two runs in three of its final four at-bats to defeat Manhattanville, 7-6, in the first game of its Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach.

The walkoff win improved the Mules to 5-0 for the first time since 1944.

Junior Christopher Bunero earned his first career win with 4 1/3 innings of hitless relief. He came on in the fifth with the bases loaded and needed just one pitch to get out of the jam. Bunero allowed only three baserunners the rest of the way, striking out five.

The winning rally started with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth. Junior Robbie Hopes walked on five pitches and was replace by freshman pinch-runner Bobby Merle, who went to second when junior Thomas Yohe was hit by a pitch. Merle scored the tying run on a double by freshman Jon Capra, and Yohe came around with the winner on an infield error.

Muhlenberg began its comeback in the sixth after loading the bases with nobody out. One run came in on a double play, and freshman Matt Riebesell doubled in the second.

A two-run homer by Hopes in the seventh made it 6-5.

Sophomore Timmy Pilrun started for the Mules and struck out eight batters in four innings of work.
