Baseball Sweeps Again

The Muhlenberg baseball team completed a successful opening weekend of the 2016 season by sweeping a doubleheader at Gallaudet, 8-2 and 9-3. Coming on the heels of a sweep of Centenary, it gave the Mules a 4-0 start for only the second time since 1978.

Freshman Chris Grillo continued to swing a hot bat on the second day of his collegiate career. After notching three hits in each game of the Centenary twinbill, he added five more hits against Gallaudet.

Grillo led an offense that hit .420 and produced 33 runs on 58 hits in the first four games.

Muhlenberg also got a stellar pitching performance from Sam Kasten in the first game of the Gallaudet doubleheader. The sophomore righty, who pitched only two innings last year, carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth inning and finished with a complete-game three-hitter in his first career start. Kasten (pictured above) allowed only two runners past first base and finished the gem with his fourth strikeout.

The Mules scored a run in five of the seven innings. Grillo led off the game with a single, stole second and eventually scored on a passed ball in the first, and he drove in a run with a single in the fourth. Sophomore Taylor Vazquez singled in a run in the second.

A two-run double off the bat of junior John Icaza extended the lead to 5-0 in the sixth, and Muhlenberg broke the game open with three in the seventh, the last two coming in on a triple by freshman Matt Riebesell.

The Mules scored in each of the first five innings of the nightcap. For the fourth straight game, Grillo led off with a hit and scored a run in the first inning, this time doubling to center and scoring on a single by Icaza. Sophomore Eric Reitmeyer hit a two-run double in the second and added an RBI double in the fifth. Senior Andrew Rava also had two doubles, scoring on an RBI hit by freshman Stephen Koester in the third and on an RBI double by junior Robbie Hopes in the fourth.

Senior Tim Hofmann pitched the first five innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out five, to earn the win.
